Canon Mathew Rukikaire has been formally installed as the second Chancellor of Kabale University following its transition into a public institution.
The ceremony was officiated by Uganda’s Vice President, Jessica Alupo, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The appointment marks a significant milestone in the university’s growth, particularly after its transition from a private institution to a public university in 2015. Rukikaire succeeds Mondo Kagonyera, who served two terms from 2016 until the end of his tenure on April 28, 2025.
His appointment was confirmed through an official instrument dated October 17, 2025, when President Museveni exercised his mandate under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act to grant him a four-year term.
As Chancellor, Rukikaire is expected to play a key role in shaping the university’s strategic direction, supporting its mission to deliver quality education, and contributing to socio-economic development in the Kigezi region.
With a background spanning public service, business, and religious leadership, he brings extensive experience in governance and economic reform, including involvement in Uganda’s privatization efforts in the 1990s.
In his new role, Rukikaire will provide strategic guidance, promote academic and research excellence, strengthen community engagement, and serve as the ceremonial head of the university.
